Debi and Jonos story

Ramsgate beach is still Jono's favourite place: 'It's where I met Debi - it's where I meet God!'

The art of compassionDebi and Jono

THEY met on a beach. And now they're helping others to reach distant shores.

Debi and Jono Retallick use art to reach out to broken people.

'I'm currently working in the social care sector in the areas of mental health, substance misuse, learning difficulties and with older people,' said Debi. 'Through my own art practice I am communicating within the realm of education, to other artists and to those who are drawn to the visual arts.'

Open flower

One of those she has been working with is Lorraine, who experiences learning difficulties. But she has been growing in confidence through Debi's workshops. 'When I asked her how she had felt about being involved with the project,' Debi recalled, 'she said, "I feel like an open flower".'

Debi's husband Jono also works as an artist with people who are seen as 'vulnerable' within their wider community. 'Doing exciting creative projects and helping people explore new ways of working is great,' he said. 'But to see a director of social care moved by the way I cleaned a person's hands after a painting session, reminds me that it's about "why you do" - not "what you do". I firmly believe in the value of intention and process.'

Exploring faith

This 30something couple aim to raise £80,000 to move from Farnham to West London - 'to establish ourselves into community as artists, build friendships and to find a context for exploring faith and the meaning of church and family'.
